Massive Lightning Storm At Beach, I'm Not There
UPDATE: The SSEC CIMSS blog written by my buddy Scott has added some wonderful satellite images of this storm.
There was a beautiful, massive thunderstorm yesterday afternoon that dropped 1,900 lightning strikes, mostly over Oak Island (Long Beach, North Carolina) where I vacation each August. I wished I were there! Here's a radar loop (download). Check out the sea-breeze front and/or outflow boundaries:
My friend Tim Armstrong who lives in Wilmington took these photos of impressive mammatus clouds there and this video of the storm.
The slow-moving storm did not prompt warnings or produce storm reports but over 4 inches of rain fell in some spots, including my beach house (the "x" on the map).
