Maps: All Tropical Storms in History
Robert A. Rohde over at Global Warming Art has generated this attractive map of every (officially designated) tropical cyclone in history (Atlantic records go back to about 1860, reliable records for the whole world since 1960).
Here's a closeup detail. Notice how much stronger the Pacific Typhoons are than our Atlantic Hurricanes.
The map was inspired by the one below:
I'd be quick to point out that you can find an interactive version of all Atlantic and Eastern Pacific Tropical Storms (including those which started out as or turned into Subtropical or ExtraTropical) tracks on NOAA's site. I used that application for my study of Azores and Europe-landfalling tropical systems. Here are a couple screen captures:
GEEK ALERT!
Being a tropical storm nerd, of course, I had obtained the Global Tropical and Extratropical Cyclone Climatic Atlas (GTECCA) CD-ROM (for DOS!) back in 1995, and posted an image of all Atlantic tracks on my website in 1996. I just found out that the page doesn't even exist anymore but a screen capture is below.
