Lows Cause Record Record Reports!
UDPATE: My new count, removing duplicates, constitutes approximately 110 record lows for yesterday. This is the highest number of any sort of record since I began keeping track in March 2003, so this cold outbreak is indeed unusual. The total number of records, excluding those duplicates, is 98, so October 2003 still reigns supreme as far as the total number of record reports in one day (but just barely!). I have updated the graph below.
ORIGINAL POST:
I saw some interesting data from the WeatherMatrix Record Reports page today. This morning's report indicates that 144 records were set on Sunday, with 156 being record low temperature reports (this number is higher because the NWS includes more than one report per station).
RECORDS REPORTED SO FAR THIS MONTH
This is notable because the highest total number of records in one day since stats were kept (Spring 2003) was 99, set in October 2003. I have to go through and remove duplicates tonight, but it seems likely that this late-season cold outbreak has set a, well, record. Here's what the record reports have looked like so far this month:
After the stats are processed later today, I will post an update to this entry.
