Lightning Photos, Radar From Last Night
I never thought I'd say this, but I'm almost annoyed by the number of storms which are repeatedly hitting Central Pennsylvania this week! I can't get anything accomplished, including blogging! Henry and I have just returned from chasing again and I haven't even gotten a chance to detail last night's storms, so here we go.
Last night's storms were impressive in several ways. One, they were moving southwest (around the edge of an upper-level low pressure system off the coast of New England). I jokingly told Henry and Ron that we'd have to chase backwards. But more importantly, last night's storms in southern Centre County were sparked by an outflow boundary, which we have discussed before. It was absolutely beautiful on AccuWeather.com RadarPlus, as you can see below.

The map below from AccuWeather.com LightningPlus shows the location of lightning strikes (plus symbols) near Henry (southerly blue "X") and my house (northerly blue "X"). I believe that the large lightning strike that Henry captured on video (screenshot below) was the large plus symbol indicated by the arrow. I had just turned my camera off when this strike hit, and it was about 4/5 of a mile away from both of us. The larger plus symbol indicates that it was a positive, rather than negative, lightning strike. Positive strikes are more rare and usually stronger.
Here's Henry's first incredible strike that I captured out of his video (PREMIUM | PRO):
The white (negative) strikes to my southwest were probably these (much lamer) shots which I videotaped (stupid umbrella!):
More, better nighttime lightning shots from me will be available soon...
