Lake-Effect 2: The Sequel Snow
UPDATE 12/17: Totals reported so far were as high as 13 inches in Oneida County, NY. Here's a radar shot from the afternoon of the 16th:
UPDATE 4 PM: We're cranking now! (Don't be fooled by the wind turbine farm on the radar, we've talked before about how they interfere with NEXRAD radars).
ORIGINAL POST: The lake-effect machine is cranking again this morning over Michigan and this will spread to New York this afternoon. We think news story that amounts could locally total 2 feet (after totaling as high as 39.7" last week). Due to slightly different winds, we will see the snow travel further southeast this time which means that the Laurel Highlands could get a good dose. I've made a permanent home for my list of lake-effect snowcams and have added the Laurel Highlands, Buffalo, Erie and Cleveland.
We also have a Twitter List to keep up with news in these areas. I'll be posting real-time news and amounts to J's Breaking Weather News at right and will post a summary of observations and webcams here once things start to get exciting.
You can see the potential accumulation in the Johnstown area clearly on the HI-RES 4-KM WRF model guess above (our official map can be found here). You can also see the "tracks" of several lake-effect bands which read into southeast Pennsylvania -- you may see some flakes but don't get too excited; this model typically overestimates snow in the Northeast. As you can see, flakes will fly in the Appalachians as well as air moves up the mountains and produces clouds and snow.
