June 2007 Final, Lightning, Tubular, KH Clouds

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist and senior weather editor

This is an update to a summary of our lucky month for storms that I did earlier this month.

First, an update on storms that I had not blogged about yet. On the 21st, Ron intercepted the storms in Johnstown, PA, filing a number of photos and videos. I missed the storms that night but I got some cool time-lapse videos and photos including KH wave and tube clouds as a storm tried to form overhead and to my Southeast. You can download this movie to see the weak radar signature that it put out.

On the 26th, we both missed the storms but Ron submitted a video report on his uneventful day.

And I finally got some lightning strikes captured from my camera's Quicktime movies on June 27th when some severe storms went by to my south. Some examples are below, click to see all images.

You can see a video from the closest strike below, or see it ad-free on our Photo Gallery. It made the lights blink and, judging from the thunder, was less than a mile and a half away.

NOTE: THE VIDEO ABOVE MAY BE PRECEDED BY ADVERTISEMENTS

The commentary goes like this:

[CAT MEOWS]
[Lightning, Lights Blink]

ME: "Whoa!"
DAUGHTER: "Aww, man!"
ME: "What was that?"
WIFE: "I don't know but the power went out!"
[THUNDER]
ME: "That was lightning. I didn't see it though."
[DOG WHINING]

Ron also filed a number of videos and photos from his storms near Johnstown on the 27th. Click here for a radar animation of the storms, both his and mine, and only mine.

And finally... I hadn't been able to post these videos yet... Henry and I did the "surround-sound storm chasing" thing again on June 12th, both taking video of the lightning strikes while we were on the phone with each other. Here are the videos (ads may appear before them on ad-supported sites):

HENRY'S VIDEO #2

Here's a final list of my blog entries related to the June 2007 Severe Storms:

Here's the final tally this month:

DAYS WITH STORMS: 15*
DAYS WITH BLOG REPORTS ON STORMS: 10*

*Counting May 31st, when the first outbreak began.

We blew away the previous three Junes for Days With Storms,* and probably bested years back to 1998, by my recollection.

2007: 14 (11 BEFORE 6/22)
2006: 10 TOTAL (5 BEFORE 6/22)
2005: 12 TOTAL (8 BEFORE 6/22)
2004: 9 TOTAL (6 BEFORE 6/22)

*Days WIth Storms = Days with at least one spotter report from The SPC [JessePedia] in the state.

As I said last time (no update here), Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were issued 5 times this month for Centre County (home to my house and AccuWeather HQ) on June 1st, June 8th, June 13th, June 19thtwice. There were only 2 STW's issued for us in 2006, none in 2004, but 6 in 2005 (besting this year).

AND THE FORECAST FOR JULY...?

SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!
