This article from Newsday speaks of good pumpkin crops in New Jersey, but not so good elsewhere. It seems it all depends on the weather, which you want to be dry, but not too dry. The article describes this years NJ crop as "great" - 30 to 40 % - compared to last year.

The article says, when looking for a pumpkin, the darker orange skin the better, with no soft spots, and a firm stem are keys to getting a good Jack-O-Lantern.
