Is New Ice Storm Affecting Same People?

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist and senior weather editor

UPDATE: Here's a new list of ice accumulations as of 5 PM Central Time. Nemaha, KS is reported an incredible 1.5 to 2 inches of ice on trees and powerlines, an almost-surely devastating storm total.

Nemaha, KS: 2.0"
Multiple Locations, IA: 1.0"
Saint Joseph, MO: 1.0"
Falls City, NE: 0.75"*
Quincy, IL: 0.60"
Lake Geneva, WI: 0.50"*

ORIGINAL POST: There was some media hype yesterday about today's ice storm affecting "the same area / people" as the previous one. I wanted to find out if this was true, so this morning I gathered some data.

Click below for a 3-day radar animation showing the first, then the second storm. Looking at this, if our delineation of ice was correct (radar images such as this are only estimating it) then the media hype about the same areas getting hit twice is not justified.

But if you look at the NWS Advisory Maps for the two events... from Saturday Night and Tuesday Morning, clearly overall this event is further southward, but there is some overlap in parts of Kansas and Missouri, where some folks may still be without power.

But as of 3 PM Central time his afternoon, enough spotter reports are in that we can start to see the trend, and right now, it doesn't look there is a lot of overlap. Let's hope it stays that way. Only where you see the purple dots are where there were reports of winter weather during both time frames. (NOTE: These are "winter" reports that could include ice OR snow so I can't be sure).

"WEEKEND" = 12/09 00:00 to 12/10 18:00; "TODAY" = 12/10 18:00 to 12/11 12:00 Z TIME
