NOTE: This entry has been superceded by a newer one.
Not only is powerful Typhoon Xangsane plowing into the Phillipines today -- a volcano there is also threatening to explode.
XANGSANE MAKES LANDFALL IN THE PHILLIPINES LAST NIGHT

Jim points out that "Mount Mayon towers near the city of Legazpi, which took a hammering. I cannot tell if it is accurate, but the six-hour rainfall reported as of 1200GMT was 45 centimeters, or 17.7 inches. This is a stupendous, staggering amount of rain. At Catarman, northwestern Samar, rainfall since the start of the storm rains is more than 37 centimeters, or 14.8 inches."
