INT: Screaming 50s Storm Hits Centam!
BREAKING NEWS...
According to the Associated Press, high waves have destroyed a small hotel plus at least 20 homes in Nicaragua. A powerful storm in the South Pacific, believe it or not, is causing the waves.
Looking at the WAVEWATCH III computer forecast model from last night (available live on our Pro site), you can see the storm, in what is referred to as the "Screaming 50s" area*, pushing 9 to 12 foot waves up into Mexico and Central America. The model forecasts waves to decrease over the next several days.

Looking at a detail of the storm, we see it is producing waves over 18 feet in the South Pacific, the second strongest storm in the world at this time.

The Screaming 50s" is the area near the 50-degree latitude line, named as such for the strong storms that circle the globe in the southern oceans, frequenty encountered by yacht racers.
