INT: Cyclone Favio Hits Africa, More
Intense Cyclone Favio had 126 mph sustained winds just before landfall in Mozambique, Africa this morning, down from a maximum of 145 mph Tuesday. Behind it were no fewer than 3 additional tropical systems moving westward in the Indian Ocean. Below is a high-res satellite image from NASA's MODIS satellite as the storm was making landfall this morning.
Behind Favio are three other "areas of interest" according to the U.S. Navy, including newly formed Tropical Cyclone Gamede (third from left).
Damage reports are coming in and unfortunately Favio comes on the heels of severe flooding in Mozambique (BBC); 120,000 people were displaced before the storm even threatened the country. In 2000, a string of cyclones devastated Mozambique [WikiPedia].
The WaveWatch III Forecast Model [JessePedia] from AccuWeather.com Professional predicts that waves from Gamede will be over 35 feet after they make a close pass to southeast Madagascar this time next week.
