INT: 13 Feet of Snow in Japan
KUDOS:Carlbeat me to this while I was spending a relaxing Saturday off the computer. I swear, I'll never let my guard down again :)
Reuters says today:
It's unclear how long it took the thirteen feet of snow to accumulate, or how long the storm lasted, so we don't know if this threatens any world snow records. The record that stands to be broken is Japan's former record of 129" in 3 days, or 189" in 6 days, both set in California, according to WeatherMatrix Member Chris Burt's book "Extreme Weather", which is the ultimate record book.
Surely there was some amount of snow on the ground before this storm, but it couldn't be confirmed by the JMA site. Certainly one station did report 394 cm (155.11 inches or 12.92 feet) of snow on the ground as of Sunday morning, according to the JMA:
