HYPE: GFS NE Snow, NAM Tropical Storm?
I'd like to try something new on my blog... I've been thinking about doing this for a long time but just haven't gotten around to it, so today I'm going to bite the bullet. One thing that sparks a lot of interest in meteorology is the nutty things that Forecast Models [JessePedia], especially long-range models, claim throughout the day. Sometimes they pick up on a big storm that ends up really happening... most of the time what they say disappears off the next run, and never comes true. What I'd like to offer you is a glimpse into the model hype every day -- what outlandish things is the GFS saying today, for example?
I'll try to do this at least once a day this month as a trial. I'll feature this on my left navigation (free site only), or you can look for the word "HYPE:" in the headlines. Let me know what you think of this feature by emailing me.
And email me if YOU see some hype on the models as well (try to stick to weather-enthusiast-readable maps, for example Nor'easter or Hurricane vs. Record 400mb Velocity). And remember, you can see the hype yourself with over 20 forecast models every day by taking a 30-day trial of the AccuWeather.com Professional site.
NAM Tropical Storm?
The NMM model is showing a growing low pressure system coming out of the Gulf, across Florida and falling to 1000mb at the end. Could Tropical Season be beginning already? The DGEX sees it too, but as a 1008, the GFS only 1014, neither with as many isobars packed around it.
GFS Northeast Snowstorm
And next, the GFS's latest attempt to milk one more snowstorm out of the season for next weekend:
