HYPE: GFS: Indian Summer to NE Snow
Blog reader Justin points out that the 12Z GFS is showing snow again in the Northeast. No big surprise right? But this time, it's not day 15, it's day 5.
It's quite a heavy mixed bag of winter precip, with snow even becoming heavy in Maine for a few hours. The DGEX is not buying it, saying it will all be rain. (No other model predicts snow/ice/rain out that far).
So what do we make of that? Well, it's probably just the GFS overdoing things again, though I'll be verrrrrry interested to see what the NAM says late tomorrow. Any winter precip, of course, would have trouble sticking to the ground this time of year, even if the temperatures were at or below freezing - they'll be close on Saturday morning:
The overrunning point here is that the weather is going to do a "180" in the Northeast this week, shaving more than 30 degrees off of high AND low temperatures. Here in State College, we broke today's record during lunch time and are headed for the upper 80's, but we'll be in the mid 50's for the Penn State game Saturday afternoon, with RealFeel temperatures in the 40's. It all spells an end to our "Indian Summer" [WikiPedia].*

It would seem the saying about New England weather (don't like it, wait a minute and it will change) will be true for Pennsylvania too this week.
*As WikiPedia says, "Indian Summer" is a term that describes the last hot spell before colder temperatures in the Fall. Of course, we can't be sure that this will be the last significant hot spell, but I'd say it will probably qualify. WikiPedia has several theories on why it's called "Indian Summer."
