Hurricane Hermine history: Florida's first since 2005
Until yesterday, Hurricane Wilma was the last Hurricane to strike the state of Florida, and the last major -- Category 3 or above -- tropical storm to hit the U.S. It still maintains the latter record, but Hurricane Hermine landed in the Florida Panhandle last night, breaking that Florida hurricane "drought."
If it seems like we've been dealing with this tropical disturbance for a while, we have. Today is day number 16 of Hermine (for a fortnight, it teased us as Invest #99L). The forecast (from one of the GFS members that only forecasts out to 10 days) is for it to go to at least day 26 at tropical storm force.
Over 20 inches of rain has fallen from the storm near Tampa, Florida, with a wide area of 5 inches or more. Indications in Brunswick County, N.C., are that between 5 and 8 inches of rain have fallen today.
The videos below show the storm at various stages through GREarth software, showing satellite, radar, recon, lightning, observations and local storm reports.
