Hurricane Gustav on RadarPlus, Cuba 211 MPH?
A report from the Cuban met office has showed wind gusts of 139 mph on the Isle of Youth [Google Map] and 211 mph at Pinar del Rio [Google Map]. I find the latter report suspect because the max sustained was so low. You can read more about my assumptions during the Spanish-to-English translation on the AccuWeather.com Forums. Gus is still looking good on the Cuba Radars (archived).
Here is a shot of 150-mph Hurricane Gustav just before sunset, when the "stadium effect" of his eye was clearly visible. What a storm. Images courtesy AccuWeather.com RadarPlus, an interactive weather system for consumers. He's coming off the coast of Cuba now (not shown on map above), so tonight we begin our two-day wait to see where the storm will make landfall after traversing the Gulf.
Below is a live satellite and model tracks. I also added a link where you can see the nearest observations from Ships and Buoys.
