Hurricane Earl Morning Update
Hurricane Earl is passing away from the Outer Banks this morning after leaving part of the area under flood waters according to the on-site XtremeWeather Cam from a storm chaser in Buxton, North Carolina. He is getting some excellent footage as he drives from Buxton to Avon. About 3500 people are without power, mostly in North Carolina. There are also some reports on Traveltell on Facebook.
Now that it's daylight, we'd like to get more live shots of what's going on, but most of the other East Coast Webcams are either down for the count, or not showing anything interesting. The Mirlo Beach webcam is down so we can't see the road or houses for a damage check, but the National Weather Service reports that Highway 12 is closed there due to overwash.
I'm helping update a story on AccuWeather.com listing the "greatest hits" of Earl, which as of 9 AM include an 82 mph wind gust (shown above). Sustained winds have not been recorded over 59 mph and that's about what I expected with the storm weakening off the coast. The storm surge is running about 2 feet above normal this morning at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
Earl is still bound for Cape Cod tonight; see AccuWeather.com for further updates on the forecast. I will be adding some more New England cams to my East Coast Webcam List this morning and I may add some stats tonight on New England -- if not, see the AccuWeather.com story listed above.
