Heavy Rain, High Winds in Northeast
I'm back online today after a business trip but the J-CAM will continue to be offline until Thursday because I am not in the office.
We are covering a tense situation in the Northeast U.S. as even more rain falls across the area. Doppler-precipitation estimates from radars indicate that over 10 inches of rain has fallen on Long Island in the last 24 hours (see high-resolution closeup from RadarPlus), and over 8 inches has fallen in northeastern Pennsylvania.
Offshore, winds have been gusting like there's a tropical storm out there (as high as 56 mph in gusts at Buoy 44008, off the Massachusetts coast, and over 50 mph at 44025 and 44017 off of Long Island). Waves of 16 feet have been reported.
In fact, both the visible satellite and a VisSat/Wind/Pressure combo from RadarPlus (shown below) confirm that there is a surface low pressure system off of the Northeast coast.
WNBC has an article and some photos from flooding in northern New Jersey this morning.
This all comes on the heels of heavy rain and flooding just four days ago. And here's the worst part: We're predicting even more rain today and Thursday (see below). Click here for a computer model output forecast for precipitation during the next 5-days. It's very impressive looking with a swath of more than 5 inches of rain covering much of the Atlantic and extending into the Northeast U.S.
