Heat Wave: CA 126, 21 States 100+
The Heat Wave of 2006* continues. You can read all about it from nationwide news sources on Google News. According to our News Summaries page and record reports obtained from WeatherMatrix, 21 states were over 100 degrees on Sunday, with 5 more at 99 degrees. Every state in the union was over 90 sometime this weekend and Death Valley, CA topped out at 126. Palm Springs, CA only dipped to 92 degrees for a low Saturday night, breaking their daily high minimum temperature of 88.
The record highs will continue today but will shift eastward. We are expected to break our record of 94 here in State College, PA today; AccuWeather predicts 96 and the NWS 95. Temperatures near 100 are expected in the major cities of Washington, D.C., New York City and Philadelphia (see NWS forecast map).
Other records of note are below.Probably 100 records were tied this weekend, and I couldn't include them all, but I tried to include anything over 115 (120 for Cali), any records which were shattered, and one high from each state. Yesterday's record list has been integrated into this one). Some but not all of these are all-time records and the previous records are indicated by parentheses ().
