Heat Wave: 90 Records Broken, 90s Into VT
UPDATE 4/27: Another 76 records were set on Sunday! Mount Washington, NH also set a daily record on Saturday, but fell 4 degrees short of their all-time April high of 60 F. For details on the Mount Washington record see Brian Clark's Mount Washington Blog (PREMIUM | PRO).
The 90's reached into Vermont on Saturday during an impressive heat wave that eclipsed records in the East. The NCDC records site says 92 record highs were set, with another 57 tied. Here is a map showing official high temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic and New England:
Grandfather Mountain, NC set a new all-time record temperature of for April of 76 degrees. That's right, it had never been that warm there in recorded history during the month of April. Pittsburgh also tied their April record at 86.
If you look at official airport observations, the heat seemed to be centered north of Richmond, Virginia. Culpepper and Fredericksburg both reported 97. I think the 104 at Woodbridge was probably bogus, but it's not out of the question that temperatures in the area approached 100. The map below is via MESOWEST (The Government Mesonet).
P.S.: Thanks for all the Comments on yesterday's blog entry. I forgot to mention that my temperature doubled in the morning, I added a note to that effect.
