Gustav/Hanna Gulf Coast? Sad Levee News
UPDATE (11 PM): Here are a couple of new links, one for this week's Gulf Loop Current imagery (that site is up and down so click here for a copy of the maps), and another for a Cayman Island webcam (thanks blog reader Johnny).
Thanks for all the great comments on my recent blog entries. It is good to see a conversation going on. If you would like to join in with other weather enthusiasts to talk about all things Tropical, check our our Hurricane Forum.

UPDATE (3 PM): Gustav is a Hurricane again, and is likely headed to be a major one, Cat 3, 4, or 5, this weekend. I have added some Press Conferences to the weather videos at right, and will continue to do that this wekeend.
UPDATE (1 PM): Joe Bastardi just showed a map live on Bloomberg showing Hanna taking the track that Henry drew earlier, with a landfall on the eastern Gulf Coast next weekend (he also said "this is a forecast 9 days out, if this landfall verifies, I want a parade.") Joe is also concerned about Hurricane Gustav strengthening rapidly over the Gulf Loop Current, as Katrina did.
UPDATE (12 PM): Here's a photo from the Associated Press of a temporary levee that people are scrambling to build in New Orleans. I'm no expert, but shouldn't we have built a permanent one? Here's an article on the problems with the Harvey Levees. Another article calls the area "the New Orleans West Bank's unfinished hurricane barrier."
IRONIC: As I was writing the storm above, my iPod just chose "When The Levee Breaks" by Led Zepplin out of 2,085 songs in "Shuffle Mode". I kid you not.
Speaking of Katrina, we got a complaint via email that we, the media, are not comparing gustav to Rita. While we don't want to forget Rita, today is the anniversary of Katrina, and Katrina was the more deadly storm (>2,500 dead or missing vs. 120 dead [WikiPedia].
UPDATE: We have issued an EyePath graphic which combines the track of (expected) Hurricane Gustav over the oil rigs and platforms of the Gulf Coast (yellow). Remember, to find out the latest statistics on platform evacuations and oil / gas prices, see the links I posted in my blog earlier this week.
P.S.: Here's hoping they keep this webcam on an oil rig [Google Map] running as the storm approaches, but I imagine they need to power down.
THE ULTIMATE DISASTER: Meteo Madness Man has issued a map (PREMIUM | PRO) ala Brendan Loy* showing that both Gustav and Hanna may hit the Gulf coast as major hurricanes next week.
