Gulf Buoy Records Awesome Waves from Ike
...Is what I would have said, if Buoy #42003 hadn't been knocked offline (possibly destroyed) by Hurricane Gustav (something the government hopes to fix soon... maybe November).
UPDATE (2 PM): Ike is now a Category 2.
A ship about the same distance from the storm, however, reported 24.6 foot waves with sustained winds of 68 mph earlier today (not too shabby for a ship report -- they usually stay away from hurricanes; bet they wish they were somewhere else).
Just so you won't be disappointed with my blog title, check out this awesome video of huge waves hitting Cuba as Ike passed over the island nation earlier this week (this was posted to the Raw Videos at right but I wanted to create a permanent record of it).

VIDEO CAPTION: As Hurricane Ike roared ashore in Eastern Cuba, it brought with it a wall of water five stories high. Destroying homes, businesses, sugar and coffee crops. With more than a million people evacuated before the storm, so far there are no reports of deaths. Before Ike hit Cuba it ravaged Haiti, the fourth hurricane to hit that impoverished country in a month, so far more than 500 have died and the toll is rising. Floods and mudslides have left people homeless and hungry. But with bridges washed out relief workers are having trouble getting food and water to those in need. And people are also suffering in the tiny Turks and Caicos islands, where the eye passed right overhead.
Here's a look on satellite at noon, showing the location of the buoy & ship mentioned above. Note that Hurricane Ike is in a similar location to where Gustav was last week.
