GFS Dreaming of a White X-mas
The GFS Forecast Model is dreaming of a White Christmas and bringing the Little Ice Age back to the Northeast on Christmas morning.
I noted yesterday that it was whipping up a Christmas snowstorm but didn't want to make a big deal out of it until it kept it consistent for a few runs -- which it has. This morning's 12Z run shows light to moderate snow over the entire Northeast (and flurries as far south as the Deep South) on Christmas Eve.
The model keeps accumulating snow north of the Carolinas as west of I-95 through D.C. (ignore the amounts on the map, they are probably too low due to a bug in the model).
But, 10 days is way too far out to really be talking about this. We need few more days before other models will chime in. Even the DGEX (which is initialized with GFS data anyway) won't show this until later this weekend. The NWS Threats map might show it soon if they are believers. Truthfully though, if the GFS ends up getting the general pattern right, the chance that the event will still be happening on the 25th is remote.
But who am I? Stay tuned to the long-range Meteorologists such as Meteo Madness Man (PREMIUM | PRO) and AccuWeather.com Professional's Joe Bastardi (PRO), who said in his "Big Dog" video this morning:
