The explanation of the Matterhorn photo by Les Cowley of Atmospheric Optics was: "An interesting one. The sun's rays are of course shining downwards and the shadow of the peak is being cast onto a thin layer of cloud lower than the mountain. The thin cloud layer acts as a screen."
Wired Magazine reviews the Gigapan Imager, a robot that takes series of high resolution photos and puts them into one huge panorma.
I'd like to welcome the following new users this week...
Keeping with the international theme, Hombre (Petr Jansa) has recently joined the Gallery. He is from Cerveny Kostelec, Czech Republic and uses a Canon EOS 400D to snap photos of various subjects, both nature and human, and even turns some of the photos into modern art. You can find out more about him, and his photos, on his website (note: not in English!)

Photographer stichen is Steve Tichenor from Alvaton, Kentucky. Steve describes himself as "Just a hobbyist, l like to shoot nature landscapes and action sports." He has a selection of wallpaper sunset photos on his website, some of which he has uploaded to the Photo Gallery, along with some ice and flower photos.

And last but not least: New user markfoto is M.J. Friedman from Livingston, Texas. Actually, according to his beautifully designed website, he travels around the country in an RV with his two dogs (who write a sort of Dog Blog), which is fascinating to me because a former coworker does the same thing. M.J. uses a Leica D and Canon camera. M.J., er, the dogs, haven't uploaded any photos yet but I look forward to them.
Friday Featured Fotos is a weekly weather photography show where I take a look at (and explain) the best photos in the AccuWeather.com Photo Gallery archive, look at photo-related gadgets, and welcome new users. Future segments may include photography, videography, and webcam tips and reviews. Any photo from the Gallery is qualified to be in this show (unlike our Moderators Picks awards, which concentrate on weather photos from the last month), so if you've seen something on the Gallery you'd like me to feature, drop me an email at community @ accuweather.com
