Forgotten Minnesota, Western Records
In all my recent blog entries about severe Eastern weather, I may have left out these points. Thanks to Chris Burt [JessePedia], Author of "Extreme Weather" , for keeping me honest:
1. Southeast Minnesota was part of the Midwest & Ohio Valley flooding, and a station in Hokbah, Minnesota (just barely in the state, see map below) established a new 1-day (24-hour) rainfall record for the entire state. Nine stations set their own records for 24-hour rainfall.
This record is now official. The NWS says:
2. Not only was it hot in the East this month; it was really hot in the West last month. Chris says:
Major cities as Salt Lake City, Las, Vegas, Reno, and Boise all just endured their hottest month (of any in recorded history) this past July:
Las Vegas, NV: 95.4 (actually 95.35) beat July 2005 (95.28)
Salt Lake City, UT: 84.0 beat July 2003 (83.5)
Reno, NV: 80.0 tied July 2005
Boise, ID: 83.1 beat July 2006 (81.5°)--a huge margin!
This is in addition to most of the weather stations in western and Central Montana (Butte, Great Falls, Helena, Kalispell, and Missoula just to mention those listed in my book).
Hence, the big red dots on the map below.
