Flooding, Tornadoes in TX, LA
Media attention is turning late this morning to easternmost Texas and southwest Louisiana, where major flooding is continuing and tornadoes have been reported. The image below (from AccuWeather.com RadarPlus) shows the NEXRAD storm-total precipitation for the area, exceeding 8 inches in some areas, and points out location of today's tornado spotter reports (red triangles). Damage from the tornadoes (but no deaths or injuries) has been reported as of noon Monday. You can also pinpoint current locations of rotating winds by finding the green boxes on the map.
Many roads and schools in Houston are closed. The Harris County EMA Office reports over 10 inches of rain in the last 30 hours at one location in Houston (see 1-Day | 30-Hour maps). The Cypress Creek near Westfield, Texas is experiencing moderate flooding at this time (LIVE | ARCHIVED GRAPH).
The radar loop I saved off earlier from the massive storm is impressive, showing rain covering the entire Southeast and Ohio Valley. Live views are available below.
