Flo: U.S. Waves, Bermuda History
Although Florence is headed to Bermuda for vacation, she'll cause rough seas on the East Coast through next week. Here's the WaveWatch model forecast for Tuesday, showing waves over 21 feet at sea near the storm, with waves over 10 feet on the Carolina coast.
To quote our Weather Headlines (PREMIUM | PRO):
Checking your storm preparation checklist is even more important when you're on a remote island. The Government of Bermuda offers a storm preparation plan for Bermuda on their website. Today's Ap Photo of the Day shows residents stocking up on storm supplies in Bermuda (WashingtonPost article):
Stocking up in Bermuda - Sept. 9, 2006 - Shoppers start buying supplies at Gorham's hardware store in Hamilton, Bermuda on Friday Sept. 8, 2006 in preparation for the arrival of hurricane Florence expected to hit the island on Monday or Tuesday. Officials in Bermuda were poised to issue a tropical storm watch or warning within the next 24 hours as Tropical Storm Florence chugged through the open Atlantic Friday. (AP Photo/ Glenn Tucker)

The Bermuda Weather Service predicts the storm will pass within 8 nautical miles of the island (archived map), even closer than deadly Fabian in 2003 (see below). The U.S. National Hurricane Center agrees (archived map), but AccuWeather says the storm will pass east of the island (archived map). Even a 100-mile approach to such a tiny island could be damaging, of course, but I presume the RFQ [JessePedia] rule still applies and the island would be best off on the east side.
What storms have hit Bermuda in the past? The most recent was Category 3 Hurricane Fabian in 2003, which passed within 12 miles of the island, killing 4 people in Bermuda (and another 3 off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada when it sunk their ship). Fabian wreaked $300 million in damage on the island of Bermuda.
Before that, we look back to 1989 with Hurricane Dean.
