Facebook Comment, TD 13 No Help for Texas Drought
An amusing comment was posted on our Tropical Depression 13 story yesterday:
While aka8941 may kid, the drought there is no joke. I don't know when I've seen a state more completely covered by severe drought.
Indeed, 80% of Texas is in an "exceptional" drought - the highest demarcation, up from 50% three months ago. No matter how you count it, many areas have received no rain at all, and sit at or near 0% of their normal, according to NOAA's estimated precipitation maps. For example, here's the yearly percentage of normal precipitation:
Most of the state is below 50%, with large portions at 25% or even below 10%! A lot of Louisiana is below 50% as well, so some of the flooding rains from Tropical Depression #13 will (mathematically at least) help -- but NOAA says over a foot of rain will be required to reset the drought:
While over a foot of rain will fall, if you believe the NMM model, most of that will be just east of the drought-stricken area. How bad has the drought hit you? Leave me a comment below or on Facebook.
