Extreme Heat in New England Friday!
UPDATE: How unusual is the heat? New Hampshire life guards don't hit the beach for another month!
ORIGINAL POST:
The heat is on in the Northeast today and it's going to feel like July. But the big story is where the most intense heat will be. Whether you ask AccuWeather or The NWS [JessePedia], the entire eastern half of the nation will be in the 80's today, but parts of Maine, New Hampshire and the small states will be in the 90's, the hottest temperatures in the nation (save for the desert Southwest).
Here are some of the record highs that will be challenged today:
DON'T JUST STAND THERE; BUST A RECORD!
Here are forecasts for the cities above (AccuWeather.com / NWS) as of 8 AM:
Bangor: 93/93
Boston: 91/92
Burlington: 91/91
Binghamton: 86/87
(What, No Buffalo?)
Providence: 93/94
Allentown: 90/88
State College, PA:* 86/82 (Record 89)
The highest prediction I could find was 96 degrees from both AccuWeather and NWS, for Concord, New Hampshire, which will blow away their record of 91 set in 1977. Here's a live NetWeather (weather for your website) so you can keep an eye on the temperature there today:
Because of relatively high relative humidities, RealFeel temperatures will make it feel like it's in the 90's up and down the East Coast, approaching 100 in parts of New England. All of Long Island east of New York City will get a slight break due to the waters offshore (see NWS map), which are still very cool (barely 60 degrees) this time of year.
*Where the blog is being written. It's interesting that the NWS is 6 degrees lower than our forecast because the other cities' forecasts are close. Either they are thinking more cloudiness today, which could cause that discrepancy, or we forecast better for our hometown. We'll see. I know yesterday the temperature had no problem hitting 85 and we're talking about warmer air today.
