Extreme Cold Temps in Northeast
UPDATE: Turns out today was "cold on both ends" here in State College. We're back in the single digits at 8 PM! Note that our normal low temperature (which we wouldn't be close to this time of night) is 24!
Henry (PREMIUM | PRO) wrote in his blog this morning that "fresh snow cover, clear skies and light winds allow
the temperatures over the snow cover to fall more than what the computer models predicted."
He's exactly right (more on this topic from Jeff Haby), extremely cold temperatures were seen this morning from the northern Plains to the Northeast, even here in State College, PA, home of AccuWeather HQ [Google Map].
As you could see from The J-CAM this morning, I came in early this morning, around 6:30. The roads were still snow covered in places and I only saw two other vehicles -- both snowplows. On my ride into work, I caught the car thermometer at +3F (see pic at right). Then, when I went out to the bank at 8 AM, I was disappointed to see that my car's windshield had frost on it - on the INSIDE! Phew, I don't know how you people in the Dakotas do this all winter.
In any case, here's a look at the official temperatures in the Northeast this morning... see also closeups of Pennsylvania and Wisconsin (where the REAL cold was, at least 22 below zero there)
Unofficially, these are the readings that I saw here in Centre County (I may add more later today when our forecasters report in):
Forecaster Dave (Zion): -3.0
KPSU: -2.0
Port Matilda (JamieO): +1.6
Bellefonte: +2.0
My House: +3.7
AccuWeather HQ: +4.7
Airport: +8.6
And in Pennsylvania (1 above zero, or under):
Bradford: -2.2
Waynesburg: -1.0
Washington County: -0.4
Westfield: +0.4
Ligonier: +0.7
Coudersport: +1.0
