Evacuations In New York, NJ
Heavy rain is finally moving northeast away from New York and New Jersey this morning (see pressure/satellite/radar map), but has probably caused additional trouble during the past 24 hours in flood-ravaged New Hampshire. WNBC reports on evacuations, roads under water, and power outages in New York, Long Island, and New Jersey.
Keep an eye on our Breaking Weather News Page for additional information.
Arthur Walters, Jr. (a WeatherMatrix member from Baiting Hollow NY) said Friday on the WeatherMatrix Forums: "This is nothing short of insane... it is pouring like mad with 30 to 40mph gusts. The basement is flooding, the streets and yard are flooded, the fields are flooded, the bathroom ceiling is leaking. I've never seen anything like this...nobody I've talked to has. This is our tenth straight day with rain." Saturday he added: "Event total stands at an all time record high of 16.16 inches. Monthly total is also an all time record high at 18.18 inches."
An initial list of rainfall totals from the National Weather Service is included below, however I'm sure this will change and a more comprehensive report will be issued later. These reports are ONLY for places reporting more than 11 inches, to save space.
Many streamlevels are at record for this time of year (see above), and several river gauges are showing moderate or major flooding, includint the Passaic River at Little Falls (shown below).
Doppler maps & buoy plots available here.
Below are two closeup maps of Long Island showing Doppler-estimated rainfall accumulations. The first shows most of Long Island with state highways. The second shows the hardest hit area with a city streets overlay. Both images are courtesy AccuWeather.com RadarPlus.
