Emily: A Tropical Storm By Any Other Name...
It's ironic that we have ATCF tracks for Tropical Storm Emily (to be) heading towards the Carolina coast, when 18 years ago a storm of a similar name was threatening the beaches here (from where I blog this week).
While Emily 2011 will hug the coast, Emily 1993 made a couple of interesting sharp turns while out at sea, and teased coastal North Carolina for days. She never officially made landfall, but caused immense damage at the Outer Banks via her eyewall.
She also made for the first high-resolution color satellite photo that was widely distributed over the fledgling Internet (something I mentioned in 2009... the web didn't really exist yet but it appeared on FTP sites). I consider Emily 1993 to be the first "Internet Era" storm.
For comparison, below is the GFS computer model's prediction of the cloud cover next Wednesday - showing a similar position of this year's Emily. As with all storms, AccuWeather.com is working on an article detailing how strong Emily 2011 will be, where this storm will go and its impacts. Since I'm on vacation, check there for updates throughout the week.
