East Wetter Summer or Not Really?
Yesterday we talked about how cool July has been over the East. Today I want to look at rainfall. First, this new graphic from us, which sounds pretty impressive:
But when you look at the actual precip vs. normal maps from the NWS Gauge-Adjusted Doppler-Precip Site for the last 60 days (approximately "meteorological Summer"), we see that there are plenty of areas below normal. However, most of the populated area of the Northeast is above normal.
There may not be a disagreement between the two maps: it's possible there have been more "days with rain" than usual, the rain has just not been leaving that much for amounts -- something else that can make the public perceive a wetter Summer when it may not be true meteorologically, just like the "low highs" we talked about yesterday.
If you go back and look at 2009 precip, most of the East Coast is below normal.
