Early Snow in the Tennessee and NC Mountains
UPDATE: Clingman's Dome also reported a coating of snow - here's a story and video from WBIR, or should I say, WBRRR!
I was surprised to hear this morning that the high peak of Mount Leconte, Tennessee had picked up 3.5 inches of snow yesterday! They said on their blog that it was the biggest "first Fall snow" since 1979 and William S. posted on Facebook that it was their earliest recorded first Fall snow since 1988, when official records began. Here's what it looked like (photo by Allyson Virden, used with permission):
They had a chilly day with a low of 23 and a high of 32, according to NWS COOP records. Other locations reporting snow in the region included Snowshoe Mountain (WV), and Mount Mitchell, NC who tied their record (from 1980) for the earliest Fall snow. Grandfather Mountain also saw some of the white stuff with temperatures in the 30s yesterday and in fact it's snowing there right now.
