Early-June-Landfalling Hurricanes
As we move into the Tropical Season, readers often ask: How early could a hurricane make landfall in the United States?
The answer: It can happen pretty darn early.
Alma in 1966 was the earliest storm to make landfall as a hurricane, in Florida, on June 9th:
Another storm in recent memory was Hurricane Allison, which made landfall (as a Tropical Storm) in Florida on this day in 1995.
This year, looking at the sea-surface temperatures...
We are concerned with sea-surface temperature anomalies over the southern Caribbean, western Gulf and Northeast coast. What I mean by this is, the water is warmer than it typically is in these areas. This could mean that the areas where storms usually form, or strengthen, could be different than usual.
Looking out in the tropics today, we have several Tropical Waves and that low pressure that we talked about Saturday, which is off the coast of the Carolinas and providing thunderstorms to the open Atlantic.
