Ear-Popping Chicago Storm, Record Rain?
If you can believe it, 233,000 people are still without power (Sun-Times) a day after severe storms hit Chicago (see photos and video on my blog yesterday). As you can see from the 24-hour precipitation image below (courtesy AccuWeather SelectWarn, a TV weather display system), areas in and south of Chicago got high amounts of rain during the storms yesterday, some over 10 inches.
Fox News says that this is the 2nd wettest August for Chicago, though I am unable to confirm this at the time of this writing (an update will be posted later if I can). None of the airport monthly rainfall numbers says over 9 inches have fallen so far at O'Hare airport. The record we're trying to beat I believe is from 20 years ago, August 1987, which the Chicago Tribune says is 17.10" but another site quoted it as 15.73" and says the runner-up was 1961 with 14.17".
Blog reader Jonathan Mischo sent in this summary of the Chicago storm, and promises some photos later today (NOTE: photos are being uploaded here):
