Did Alberto Fix the Florida Drought?
I was surprised to learn in school that hurricanes purpose in nature is no mystery -- they exist to equal out extremes, in other words to move warm air and moisture from the equator northward.
Alberto did a pretty good job, but it didn't completely solve Florida's drought problem.
As you can see from the map below, it increased 2006 rainfall compared to normal by 5-15 percent, but some locations such as Orlando, Naples and Jacksonville are still under 3/4 of what they should have seen in the rain gauge this year. Raleigh, NC, which wasn't doing that bad to start with, is now on par for the year.
Of course, statistics is one thing -- if you're looking to solve a drought and your a farmer, getting it all at once isn't a great solution if it washes away your land or puts it under water.
