Deadly Tornado in North Carolina
The Wilmington Star reports this morning:
Storms this morning spawned an "intense" tornado that touched down just south of Riegelwood in Columbus County, according to the National Weather Service.
FoxNews is reporting on-air that 8 people were killed by the storm.
Looking at the radar image above from AccuWeather.com RadarPlus, it is easy to see the hook-shaped echo indicating the approaching tornado. The storm (labeled "G2") has also been tagged as having a Tornadic Vortex Signature by RadarPlus (as indicated by the red triangle). The location of the fatalities is shown by the "X". You can also see strong rotation (red next to green) on the velocity radar image. Radar loops are available at this location.
The NWS Storm Spotter reports from yesterday (yesterday is considered anytime before 7 AM) read:
HIGHWAY PATROL REPORTED TORNADO TOUCHDOWN NEAR HOLLYTREE DR. AND HWY 87 NEAR THE CAUTION LIGHTS AT RIEGELWOOD. SEVERAL HOMES DEMOLISHED WITH FATALITIES. HIGHWAY PATROL
