Could Tropical Storm Lisa Hit Africa?
All eyes are on Tropical Storm Matthew today, but some forecast models are saying Tropical Storm Lisa could head east into Africa!
I've blogged before about the history of tropical storms (or their remnants) hitting the Azores and the United Kingdom, and we all remember when a Tropical Storm Vince hit Spain in October 2005. But it's been since November 2005 that I've seen a storm approach Africa (it was the remnants of Tropical Storm Delta then which damaged the Canary Islands and moved in to Morocco).
However, today is not such a clear-cut case; only 3 models (2 shown above and 1 more long-range) out of over 50, are suggesting that Lisa will head in that direction and our official forecast (archived) has her moving in the opposite direction. But what is the history of tropical storms going "the wrong way" and making landfall on the African coast? Short answer: Delta was the only one when it (as an Extratropical storm) made landfall in Morocco. Here's a screen shot from NOAA's Hurricane GIS system of all storm tracks in that area since 1850:
