VIDEO CAPTION: Colorado Governor Bill Ritter has declared Weld County a state of emergency after a massive tornado blew through the county, doing a tremendous amount of damage in the town of Windsor. The governor boarded a helicopter late Thursday afternoon (5-22-08) and took an aerial tour of the damage done in Windsor and other parts of Weld County. After his tour, the governor held a news conference and told reporters how impressed he was with the actions of people that resulted in lives being saved. He also said he has been in touch with federal emergency officials to see what help might be available. One of the places hit hard was a large day care center, where more than 100-children were when the storm hit. Thanks to some advanced warning and planning, daycare workers were able to get all the children to a safe location without any of the children being hurt. One person was killed when the tornado ripped through a campground. Several people were injured and hundreds of homes, buildings and businesses were damaged or destroyed. Splintered wood, mangled metal and other debris cluttered roads, yards and agricultural fields.
