Cold Air? Check. Winter Storm in 3, 2, 1...
There are two important things to remember about this weekend's storm. One, this incoming cold air is VERY cold for this time of year. Two, heavy snow may not affect the population in the Northeast, but there will be a lot of travel-disrupting ice with this storm.
More on the cold air... Henry said on his blog this morning that the models are not sensing how cold the air is over the Northern Plains this morning and man, it is cold for this first major winter storm of the season - below is a map of the absolutely frigid below-zero temps that the ground weather stations are seeing this morning.
In fact, it's so cold that the ground already shows up like clouds in the Northern Plains and only the rivers stand out in normal "land" colors. (This happens during the winter because Infrared satellites detect the temperature of the clouds -- or ground, whichever they can't penetrate).
