Central Pennsylvania's stormless spring
I've lived in central Pennsylvania for almost 20 years now. I'm not sure that I remember such a quiet severe weather season. Here are maps of the severe weather warnings and spotter reports from May 1, 2015, to June 23, 2015, and then the same plot for that period in 2016:
Why? It's not that it's been unusually cold, we've had plenty of hot weather; it's just due to the position of the high pressure systems, we're in a short-term drought, with less than 20 percent of the normal rainfall. We need the weather pattern to change to get us back in the rain area.
Generally, we get a storm or two between February and April, then an increase in May, with a peak in late May and early June, and again in July. This year, we have literally not had a single warning or storm report here in Centre County, as shown above.
