Central PA T-Storm 7/5: Flooding Rain, Photos
A small storm passed over AccuWeather HQ and my house (but not Henry's!) last night, delivering extreme rainfall for a short period. It dropped nearly a half an inch of rain in 10 minutes! Here's a radar shot. The X's are, from north to south, AccuWeather HQ, My House, and the residence of Meteo Madness Man (PREMIUM | PRO).
Specifically, at the The AccuWeather Weather Station, 0.49â€Â of rain in 13 minutes, 0.46â€Â of which fell in in 10 minutes, with a maximum rainfall rate of 0.08â€Â/minute or an effective rate of 4.8â€Â per hour (see graphs below).
In front of my house, the drainage system couldn’t keep up and the road flooded, which hadn’t happened since last fall when leaves were stuck in the drain grate (see blog entry & photo). Obviously that wasn't the case this time, so I have to assume it was just too much rain for the drainage system. The flooding was not quite as severe, creeping only about two feet into my driveway vs. the five feet last fall. My rain gauge (of course) was clogged at my house and I measured 0.32" when I dug it out, but a fellow meteorologist got .40 at his house nearby.
The clouds were interesting and I tried to snap some pics but it was getting dark at the time so they didn't turn out so great, you can access them below.
I did get some cool video of heavy rain at the baseball field across from my house, notice the rain cascading off the roof in the lower right near the end of the video:
