Can Drought Be Good For Us?
Most people associate drought with negative results -- crops wither and die, costing farmers thousands; homeowners' water bills go up as they try to make their grass green, water restrictions are put into effect, inconveniencing thousands... but droughts do have some positive effects, as illustrated by these graphics drawn by AccuWeather.com meteorologists:
As small shrubs and plants with shallow roots wither and die, more rainwater is absorbed by trees with deeper roots. Only in the most severe droughts can trees be affected by the lack of water.
Drought also leads to less standing water, which means less mosquitoes. Dry weather also makes for sweeter berries which leads to better wine vintages (not sure why, horticulturists or wine connoisseurs help me out here) and smaller pumpkins (I guess that's a good thing if you're a big pumpkin bigot.
