C-C-Cold and More Cold Coming

By Jesse Ferrell, AccuWeather meteorologist and senior weather editor

Published Jan 22, 2011 1:00 PM EST | Updated Jan 22, 2011 2:46 PM EST

Copied

It was a frigid night across the Midwest and Northeast, and the next two nights could get even colder. Here's a look at temperatures this morning:

Temperatures were below zero in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New England. Some highlights from mesonet stations according to MesoWest:

Lawton, PA: -14 State College, PA: -6* Frankfort, KY: -2 Bruceton & Saint Marys, WV: -1

The graphs from my weather station (which measured the -6*) are shown above. Note that, every time the wind drops, the temperature drops. This is because "radiational cooling" is allowed to begin, and happens fast due to the snow cover. When the wind gusts up again, the temperature rises as the air mixes. This is the case in much of the area and can make a difference of 10 degrees between stations!

Here are readings from Centre County (home of AccuWeather HQ):

mesonet122a

Of course, these readings are nothing like 2009, when I recorded -15 and a -28 reading was recorded in the state (and the state record is -42!)

*That was the reading from my house. Note that the map above, which shows 24-hour minimums, didn't pick up the actual minimums of our Centre County Mesonet. This is because Mesowest only receives data every 15 minutes. If you click on the links for the individual stations on the mesonet page, those who have "Davis WeatherLink" software are showing the actual low temperatures from the weather station consoles.
