Best Cell Phone Lightning Pic Ever, More Photos
When fellow Accu-Worker Ethan stopped by my desk this morning saying he got this picture of lightning on his cell phone, I was amazed, and I might not have believed him if he hadn't shown me the image on his Blackberry Pearl 8130.
The image from the 2.0 MP camera exhibits the typical "soft focus" from all cell phone cameras, but the amazing thing is that he clicked the button at the right time. Lightning is nearly impossible to capture (outside of video) without a long exposure camera. I would think it would be even harder on a cell phone camera; I can't even get my dog to stand still enough to get a clear shot. Maybe the typical slowness of the picture taking progress on cell phones actually helped out here.
In any case, this is the best cell phone picture I've ever seen of lightning and Ethan was quite lucky to get it.
Of course, he couldn't have picked a better night. Last Saturday, June 21st featured more lightning than I've seen here in years. I'll have more information on my blog later this week about that storm, the ones on Sunday, and more last night. We're having so many storms around here, I'm getting behind!
Speaking of last night, Local storm chaser Ron "R-Factor" Shawley took the lightning photo below on top of a mountain behind Johnstown, PA, which I believe is his best shot ever. click through to the original size to see it in all its glory. He was using a high quality Canon Rebel digital camera that allows for long exposures. He also got additional shots and a video.
In other recent lightning news... I attended a great Lightning Seminar here at AccuWeather this week and I'll be posting a number of previously-unknown facts about lightning this weekend.
