Bastardi Storm: Hatteras Hype All Week
I'm calling this "The Bastardi Storm" because AccuWeather.com Professional's Joe Bastardi [BIO] (PRO) is the only one talking about it today. And he might be the only one whoever talks about it if it stays off the coast (Dah-dum-chi! Just kidding, I'll be here all week, please tip your waitress).
Seriously though, Joe is the only one here, or elsewhere that I've seen, who is addressing the possible danger that this storm could play to the Outer Banks and surrounding waters next week. We don't even have a map to show the storm, but here's what the models say:
NAM: Storm Forms Late Sunday, Strongest by Monday Morning
NAM: Rain Barely Reaches Coast Then, Or By Monday Night
I say "possible danger" because it's one of those situations where, if it's 100 miles west it'll be big news, 100 miles east and nobody will notice. Such is the case when forecasting for the easternmost shore of the Carolinas, but hey, I called NC home for 23 years so I thought I'd mention it.
Both the NMM and the GFS think the storm's maximum strength will be around 999mb or 29.50", which is a pretty good storm but no hurricane. The GFS's solution where the storm moves out to sea, then back, hangs around all week and finally dissipates towards the weekend, is really weird. Check out the animation from our Pro site, you won't believe it.
GFS: Strongest By Monday Morning, But Around All Week (LOOP)
Joe says that the storm will conspire with other weather in the area to drive heavy rain, cold temperatures and high winds onto the coasts Sunday, spoiling many a beach weekend:
