Blog reader Adrian points out this story in the San Luis Obispo, California website that has an awesome array of lightning photos and videos taken in the area during a rare thunderstorm on the night of August 29-30. (Because this is a commercial blog, I am not allowed to show any of the actual photos here).

The storm caused two house fires and was unexpected, according to The NWS [JessePedia], who was quoted in the article. The article quotes a meteorologist as saying that the storm "went on for 8 hours" and in fact a radar animation from that night (download*) shows scattered small thunderstorms moving over the area during the late overnight and early morning hours.
