Another Day of Huge Diurnal Temperature Changes

Earlier this Spring I blogged about "diurnal" changes in temperature experienced at my weather station here in State College, Pennsylvania, home of AccuWeather HQ [Google Map]. At that time, I had just recorded a 42-degree change in one 12-hour period. Sunday, I broke that record with a 44-degree rise.
The lower dew point and radiational cooling of the coming Fall allowed the temperature to fall to 46 degrees, even though the afternoon high was 90 when a cloudless day and mini-heat wave allowed for it. It was literally too cold in the morning to be outside, and too hot during the afternoon. I felt like I was living in the desert (where temperature swings bigger than this are much more common).
The local official station at the airport (KUNV) only saw a 34.7 degree difference due to both a warmer low and cooler high. The vegetation surrounding my station may have inflated the high temperature reading -- though Elliot Abrams' station, which is at a higher elevation and out in the open also registered 90. However the official station at Cumberland, Maryland, just south of the PA border, saw a 40-degree rise.
