Anniversary of `85 Tornado Outbreak
Yesterday was the 21-year anniversary of the 1985 Tornado Outbreak, which spawned 21 tornadoes across Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Ontario.
Our own Henry was here at AccuWeather during the outbreak. He tells me that many of the meteorologists were at his house awaiting the outbreak (remember, real-time data was hard to come by 20 years ago). Then a massive supercell appeared on the horizon moving north of State College, Pennsylvania. It was the storm that let loose one of PA's only F5 tornadoes in history, a massive tempest that drew a path 105 miles long and 1000 feet wide up and down the mountains for 90 minutes.
You can find a detailed map and list of the PA tornadoes here. Various plaques in Pennsylvania have been put up in remembrance of the event.
